SIZE AND FUNCTIONALITY OF SITE

Capshaw Middle School is located on 18 acres. The school was first opened in 1978. The total square footage is 89,872, with 5,008 square feet in portable buildings.

INFRASTRUCTURE (ON-SITE AND OFF-SITE)

The school building is located directly off a very busy residential feeder street, Zia Road. This location is subject to congestion and speeding problems at times during the day. The back of the site slopes to an arroyo, which is fenced off. The road system has been modified to loop around the school, allowing the parents to queue on site around the building. The four-across parking for dropping off and picking up on the road by the gym can be dangerous when parents are in a hurry. This parent loop road bisects the academic site, separating portable classroom buildings from the main building. With the narrowness of the site, there may not be a better solution. However, some additional sidewalks are needed for safety, extending from Zia Road and the play field areas to the school building.

At school dismissal, the vehicular entry to the site becomes very congested. The front area bus loading and staff / visitor parking areas are not adequately separated. The front drives and parking areas are in poor condition, especially where the buses drive. The main play area is large and had worn wooden elements, a poor basketball court, and a storage/concession building in fair to poor condition. The landscaping is poor, with limited growth potential along the main public road area. The football field was expected to receive artificial turf surfacing. The dirt track is damaged and unsafe.

The school is again and does not have visible site improvements.

BUILDING CAPACITIES

The following school building capacities are shown in the chart below:

Design with portables (also called “building capacity”) is the generic enrollment average of 7th and 8th grade students in a class times the number of classrooms in the school. The potential number of students per classroom is an average of 25.

Program with portables (also called ''functional capacity'') is the New Mexico Public Education Department's pupil to teacher ratio for 7th and 8th grade students in a class times the number of classrooms in the school after the number of classrooms is reduced by subtracting rooms used for something other than general education times a number of factors.

Design without portables is the generic enrollment average of 7th and 8th grade students in a class times the number of classrooms in the school if the school no longer has portables and if activities currently in portables are housed in permanent classrooms. The potential number of students per classroom is an average of 25.

Program without portables is the New Mexico Public Education Department's pupil to teacher ratio for 7th and 8th grade students in a class times the number of classrooms in the school after the number of classrooms are reduced by subtracting rooms used for something other than general education and if all activities currently in portables are housed in a permanent classroom times a number of factors.

Enrollment 2010-11 40th Day is the number of students attending the school on the state reporting day of the 2010-11 school year.

Enrollment at Capshaw does not exceed its design or program capacity.

HISTORIC TRENDS AND PROJECTIONS FOR ENROLLMENT

Capshaw Middle School has had fluctuating enrollment, with growth since 2003-04. Enrollment is projected to decline in the next five years, due in part to the expected lack of growth in several of the feeder schools. With residential growth in its attendance area, Capshaw Middle School is expected to grow in years 2011-2016.

ATTENDANCE

Capshaw Middle School is located on W Zia Rd. just east of St. Francis Dr. Students living in most of the southern portion of the district make up the assignment area. Students are transported to school on 1 of 11 buses. Students living anywhere in the district are authorized to attend Capshaw and be transported to school. Students ride their regularly scheduled bus to their assigned middle school and then are shuttled to Capshaw. Of the students living in the assignment area, 67% attend Capshaw Middle School. Of the total number of students who attend the school, 61% are from the assignment area.

OPPORTUNITIES ANALYSIS

Capshaw MS:
Should be included in the recent rezoning review
Should be included in a comprehensive plan
Should be included in future partnership opportunities
Should be evaluated for future capital projects for the next bond issue and/or capital program

No changes are recommended for Capshaw, however any planned changes to Alameda Middle School will influence enrollment here.

Decisions should include future middle school athletic programs.
