SIZE AND FUNCTIONALITY OF SITE

Santa Fe High School is located on 164.4 acres. The school was first opened in 1964 and had additions in 1992, 1995, 1996, 2001 and 2003. The total square footage is 327,132, with 5,920 square feet in portable buildings.

INFRASTRUCTURE (ON-SITE AND OFF-SITE)

The site is very large and very complex, with mixed uses and extreme slopes. Major portions of the facility evaluated in 1993 have been replaced and the site has received major improvements.

The addition of a number of new buildings has had significant impact on the campus. A building at the south campus is vacant and should be demolished, or refurbished. Significant work has been done to the parking lots, drop off lanes, exiting, perimeter fencing and gates.

BUILDING CAPACITIES

The following school building capacities are shown in the chart below:

Design with portables (also called “building capacity”) is the generic enrollment average of 9th to 12th grade students in a class times the number of classrooms in the school. The potential number of students per classroom is an average of 25.

Program with portables (also called ''functional capacity'') is the New Mexico Public Education Department's pupil to teacher ratio for 9th to 12th grade students in a class times the number of classrooms in the school after the number of classrooms is reduced by subtracting rooms used for something other than general education times a number of factors.

Design without portables is the generic enrollment average of 9th to 12th grade students in a class times the number of classrooms in the school if the school no longer has portables and if activities currently in portables are housed in permanent classrooms. The potential number of students per classroom is an average of 25.

Program without portables is the New Mexico Public Education Department's pupil to teacher ratio for 9th to 12th grade students in a class times the number of classrooms in the school after the number of classrooms are reduced by subtracting rooms used for something other than general education and if all activities currently in portables are housed in a permanent classroom times a number of factors.

Enrollment 2010-11 40th Day is the number of students attending the school on the state reporting day of the 2010-11 school year.

Enrollment at Santa Fe does not exceed its design or program capacity. Program capacity would not be exceeded if all students living in the assignment area would attend the school. Enrollment is controlled by the number of transfer students the school accepts.

HISTORIC TRENDS AND PROJECTIONS FOR ENROLLMENT

Santa Fe High School enrollment generally declined from 1997-98, with some stabilization since 2004-05. In-transfers have balanced the lack of growth in students living in its attendance area. Enrollment is projected to fluctuate at approximately the same level.

ATTENDANCE

Santa Fe High School is located on Siringo Rd. in the center of Santa Fe. Students living in the eastern portion of the district make up the assignment area. Students living in El Dorado, Galisteo, Lamy, Glorieta and areas in between those communities have the opportunity to attend either Capitol or Santa Fe High Schools by shuttling from El Dorado Elementary Schools. Students are transported to school on one of 9 buses. Of the students living in the assignment area, 74% attend Santa Fe High School. Of the total number of students who attend the school, 74% are from the assignment area.

RESIDENTIAL GROWTH PATTERNS

Relatively few developments have been identified in the Santa Fe High School attendance area with the major exception of the Las Solares master plan, which is a large development. Build-out of this and the other smaller developments will result in a substantial increase in students, although, the time frame for development is uncertain.

OPPORTUNITIES ANALYSIS

Santa Fe HS:
Should be included in the recent rezoning review
Should be included in a comprehensive plan
Should be included in future partnership opportunities
Should be evaluated for future capital projects for the next bond issue and/or capital program

No changes are recommended for Santa Fe HS, although the district might wish to review the school’s bus-parking situation.
