SIZE AND FUNCTIONALITY OF SITE

E.J. Martinez Elementary School is located on 10 acres. The school was first opened in 1959 and had additions in 1969 and 1993. The total square footage is 49,088.

INFRASTRUCTURE (ON-SITE AND OFF-SITE)

The school building is located directly off the corner of a very busy residential intersection. The back of the site is densely wooded and slopes to a major arroyo.

Significant reworking of the site has occurred, and has created a well functioning bus loading, parking area, and parent pickup/dropoff areas, along the Westside of the campus. Each function has been separated, and now functions well.

Alongside the east of the campus, a large circular turning/stopping area has been added.

The main playground area is large and has a nice wooden gazebo. The school takes pride in its orchard and water diversion/retention systems. The landscaping is attractive.

BUILDING CAPACITIES

The following school building capacities are shown in the chart below:

Design with portables (also called “building capacity”) is the generic enrollment average of PK to 6th grade students in a class times the number of classrooms in the school. The potential number of students per classroom is set by the minimum requirements for class size established by the New Mexico Public Education Department.

Program with portables (also called ''functional capacity'') is the generic enrollment average of PK to 6th grade students in a class times the number of classrooms in the school after the number of classrooms is reduced by subtracting rooms used for something other than general education times a loading factor of 95%.

Design without portables is the generic enrollment average of PK to 6th grade students in a class times the number of classrooms in the school if the school no longer has portables and if activities currently in portables are housed in permanent classrooms.

Program without portables is the generic enrollment average of PK to 6th grade students in a class times the number of classrooms in the school after the number of classrooms are reduced by subtracting rooms used for something other than general education and if all activities currently in portables are housed in a permanent classroom times a loading factor of 95%.

Enrollment 2010-11 40th Day is the number of students attending the school on the state reporting day of the 2010-11 school year.

Enrollment at E.J. Martinez does not exceed its design or program capacity. Enrollment is level because an equal number of students leave the area as are transferring into the school.

HISTORIC TRENDS AND PROJECTIONS FOR ENROLLMENT

Enrollment has steadily declined each school year since 1999-2000 at E.J. Martinez Elementary School. Enrollment is projected to increase gradually, due to a few large classes and limited scattered residential growth.

CHARACTERISTICS AND IMPACTS OF NEIGHBORHOOD AND COMMUNITY

E.J. Martinez was the Postmaster of Santa Fe and served as the President of the School Board for a time. He was an avid gardener, hiker and outdoorsman. E.J. Martinez Elementary School was constructed in 1959. Since then, there have been two major additions to the building, one in 1969 and one in 1993-4. A major renovation of the two older wings is now underway to bring our facility up to current standards.

CURRENT AND FUTURE PROGRAMS

The school offers a comprehensive program for students in grades K-6. For its core academics, the school uses state-of-the-art models and programs for instruction. A strong focus in all grades is on mastery of the essential skills of reading, writing across the curriculum, mathematics and critical and creative thinking. Students utilize the essential skills to enhance their knowledge and understanding of themselves and the world and people around them through their studies of science and social studies. In addition to core academics, the program includes art, music and physical education for all students. The school program includes counseling, social work, resource, Title I, bilingual education, gifted education and service learning in the upper grades.

The school is well-integrated with the community. An after-school program serves children from several district schools from dismissal until 6:00 p.m. Extracurricular programs include several basketball leagues, wrestling, swimming, and cheerleading. The school offers health programs, science fair, programs for parent support (bi-monthly newsletter), and opportunities for parent involvement (PTA, Grandparents in the Classroom). The facility is also used as a meeting place for several civic organizations.
