SIZE AND FUNCTIONALITY OF SITE

Larragoite Elementary School is located on 11.0 acres. The school was first opened in 1941 and had additions in 1947, 1959, 1963, 1969 and 2004. The total square footage is 66,445, with 15,120 square feet in portable buildings.

INFRASTRUCTURE (ON-SITE AND OFF-SITE)

The site is located on a busy collector street in a mixed use area. The site is larger than the maximum area recommended for an elementary school, but it is not entirely usable. On-site parking is adequate for staff and visitors. There is room for special event parking. The site offers room for site development options and building expansion.

Parent drop-off/pick-up was not organized and improvements are needed to control traffic flow. Only one bus served the site at a time.

Site issues that needed to be addressed included poor traffic flow and lack of separation, and accessible parking and access route to the main entrance. (SFPS Preservation Schools Study 2002)

HISTORIC TRENDS AND PROJECTIONS FOR ENROLLMENT

Larragoite Elementary School enrollment has gradually declined and is projected to continue to decline, then stabilize due to expected stable kindergarten classes.

ATTENDANCE

Larragoite Elementary School is located on Agua Fria St on the northwest side of Santa Fe. Most students walk to school, but 1 bus transports students living on West Alameda Street and Pinon Hills. Of the students living in the assignment area, 52% attend Larragoite Elementary School. Of the total number of students who attend the school, 66% are from the assignment area.

CHARACTERISTICS AND IMPACTS OF NEIGHBORHOOD AND COMMUNITY

Larragoite ES is part of a diverse community. It participates in Community Partnerships, a community-based program to connect elementary students to nature and community service through experiential and outdoor field studies.

CURRENT AND FUTURE PROGRAMS

The school has business/community partnerships with the city of Santa Fe Foster Grandparents, National Dance Institute, Talking Hands, Talking Feet, Girls Inc. and Santa Fe Boys and Girls Clubs. It offers programs in visual and performing arts, music, sports, associated programs that extend curriculum (Student Council, Yearbook Club), health programs, academic support programs (LAB – Larragoite Academic Boost, after-school tutoring during the winter), Spanish and English spelling bee, and parent support programs (School Advisory, PTC).

OPPORTUNITIES ANALYSIS

Larraguoite Elementary School was closed at the end of May 2010. Students are now assigned to Aspen Community Magnet School
