SIZE AND FUNCTIONALITY OF SITE

Kearny Elementary School is located on 15.5 acres. The school was first opened in 1967 and had additions in 1986 and 2004. The total square footage is 50,994, with 6,144 square feet in portable buildings.

INFRASTRUCTURE (ON-SITE AND OFF-SITE)

The site is large and there is room for expansion. The updated parking area is ample for special event parking. There is clear delineation between bus zones, and parent parking. The 4’ tall cyclone fences clearly direct circulation to designated crosswalks.
The area immediately behind the building is tiered, with steps up to the main playground area. This area has several minimal metal shade structures and no landscaping. The playfields are substandard, as is the kindergarten play area: small and unattractive, with no paving, shade, tables, or landscaping. Landscaping throughout the site is in poor condition. A colony of prairie dogs has become a significant nuisance and their holes present a serious hazard. The back dirt fields and building exits have drainage problems.

BUILDING CAPACITIES

The following school building capacities are shown in the chart below:

Design with portables (also called “building capacity”) is the generic enrollment average of PK to 6th grade students in a class times the number of classrooms in the school. The potential number of students per classroom is set by the minimum requirements for class size established by the New Mexico Public Education Department.

Program with portables (also called ''functional capacity'') is the generic enrollment average of PK to 6th grade students in a class times the number of classrooms in the school after the number of classrooms is reduced by subtracting rooms used for something other than general education times a loading factor of 95%.

Design without portables is the generic enrollment average of PK to 6th grade students in a class times the number of classrooms in the school if the school no longer has portables and if activities currently in portables are housed in permanent classrooms.

Program without portables is the generic enrollment average of PK to 6th grade students in a class times the number of classrooms in the school after the number of classrooms are reduced by subtracting rooms used for something other than general education and if all activities currently in portables are housed in a permanent classroom times a loading factor of 95%.

Enrollment 2010-11 40th Day is the number of students attending the school on the state reporting day of the 2010-11 school year.

Enrollment at Kearny does not exceed its design capacity, but program capacity is exceeded. Enrollment is level because an equal number of students leave the area as are transferring into the school. An addition would be needed at Kearny if portable facilities would be removed.

HISTORIC TRENDS AND PROJECTIONS FOR ENROLLMENT

Kearny Elementary School enrollment has generally declined since 1997-98 and is projected to stabilize, due to expected stable kindergarten classes.

ATTENDANCE

Kearny Elementary School is located on Avenida De Las Campañas, just north of Rodeo Rd. Along with the areas around the school, Kearny also educates some students living in the former Turquoise Trail assignment area. (Those students are now assigned to Nava.) Students are transported to school on 1 of 2 buses. Of the students living in the assignment area, 76% attend Kearny Elementary School. Of the total number of students who attend the school, 75% are from the assignment area.
