MISSION

Kaune Elementary will be an environment where:

1. Teachers and students feel safe, secure and happy;
2. Each pupil will be prepared to be a contributing citizen of a diverse and multicultural society. To this end, each pupil will be guided toward understanding, appreciation and respect of their own cultural heritage and that of others.
3. Each person is motivated to learn about and master new concepts, develop avenues to inspire curiosity, share new ideas and apply what has been learned to any environment of the 21st Century.
4. Each individual student receives support, encouragement, and any other supplementary service needed to accomplish the above goals in an environment that promotes achievement and a positive self-concept.

OWNERSHIP

SIZE AND FUNCTIONALITY OF SITE

Kaune Elementary School is located on 5.25 acres. The school was first opened in 1950 and had additions in 1968, 1972 and 1996. The total square footage is 39,180, with 3,328 square feet in portable buildings.

INFRASTRUCTURE (ON-SITE AND OFF-SITE)

The school is located along a residential street with awkward dimensions and poor traffic access for the school’s feeder area. The main playground area is spread over a large area. The kindergarten play area is distant from the kindergarten classes, and equipment and drainage are inadequate. The 1998 courtyard area was landscaped by the school. The main north parking lot is small. It is used in part for the drop-off / pick-up of students, due to the small size of the site. The construction of the south parking pull-through lane has provided good separation between the bus drop-off/pick-up area, parking and parent pick-up areas. Walkways between the main building and portables and onto the playground are poor and uncovered. The front sidewalk is very narrow and heaving. (SFPS Preservation Schools Study 2002)

CHARACTERISTICS AND IMPACTS OF NEIGHBORHOOD AND COMMUNITY

Kaune Elementary School, one of the oldest schools in Santa Fe, is located in a small neighborhood off of Cerrillos Road. The school was remodeled in 2003, restoring one of the oldest schools in Santa Fe.

CURRENT AND FUTURE PROGRAMS

The school’s primary grades concentrate on language acquisition and reading. Upper grades include additional math and science. The entire school is participating in “Read Across America.”

The school offers a chess club and science competitions are part of the sixth grade curriculum. In 2007, the school is participating in the statewide Mars expedition, M3 Mission, sponsored by the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory. Students build and launch water rockets as the culminating activity in their physical science and astronomy units. Kaune also participates in the “National History Day” competition.

Kaune has two computer labs and offers reading and math support programs on computers.

The school offers programs in visual and performing arts, sports, after-school programs (Team of Champions), Chess Club and PTO.

OPPORTUNITIES ANALYSIS

Kaune Elementary School was closed at the end of May 2010. Students are now assigned to Aspen Community Magnet School.

SFPS is negotiating with Desert Academy for purchase of the facility. The purchase agreement would include a clause that reverts ownership of the property back to SFPS in 60 years.
