SIZE AND FUNCTIONALITY OF SITE

Aspen Community Magnet School is located on 15.88 acres. The school was first opened in 1980 as a middle school, but is now housing students in grade K-6. The total square footage is 69,085 with 2,560 square feet in portable buildings.

INFRASTRUCTURE (ON-SITE AND OFF-SITE)

The shape of the site and its topography limit development of the school to the northeast. Though some work has been done, landscaping and drainage at the front of the school are poor. The site has an awkward layout, making it difficult to find space to park for a schoolwide event.

Separation is good between the bus area and parking and student drop-off/pick-up areas. However, the student drop-off experience is confusing and dangerous at times, forcing some parents to drop off students on La Madera. The service drive cuts off access to the field and play courts. An unattractive semi-landscaped court in front of the building needed improvement.

Two parking lots and a bus lane are nearing completion. The site has new kindergarten and older student play fields. The football field is newly renovated with a track and bleachers.

BUILDING CAPACITIES

The following school building capacities are shown in the chart below:

Design with portables (also called “building capacity”) is the generic enrollment average of PK to 6th grade students in a class times the number of classrooms in the school. The potential number of students per classroom is set by the minimum requirements for class size established by the New Mexico Public Education Department.

Program with portables (also called ''functional capacity'') is the generic enrollment average of PK to 6th grade students in a class times the number of classrooms in the school after the number of classrooms is reduced by subtracting rooms used for something other than general education times a loading factor of 95%.

Design without portables is the generic enrollment average of PK to 6th grade students in a class times the number of classrooms in the school if the school no longer has portables and if activities currently in portables are housed in permanent classrooms.

Program without portables is the generic enrollment average of PK to 6th grade students in a class times the number of classrooms in the school after the number of classrooms are reduced by subtracting rooms used for something other than general education and if all activities currently in portables are housed in a permanent classroom times a loading factor of 95%.

Enrollment 2010-11 40th Day is the number of students attending the school on the state reporting day of the 2010-11 school year.

Enrollment at Aspen does not exceed its design or program capacity. Capacity would not be exceeded even if all students living in the assignment area would attend the school.

HISTORIC TRENDS AND PROJECTIONS FOR ENROLLMENT

Aspen first opened as an elementary school in September of 2010. Over the next 2 years, the school will add one grade at a time until enrollment includes 8th grade.

ATTENDANCE

Aspen Community Magnet School is located on La Madera just north of Agua Fria St. Students living along West Alameda including Pinon Hills, along Agua Fria Street up to Arroyo de las Cruces and Camino Solano, and the area east of Cerrillos from Fourth Street to Alta Vista including Pacheco Street make up the assignment area. Students are transported to school on 1 of 3 buses.

CHARACTERISTICS AND IMPACTS OF NEIGHBORHOOD AND COMMUNITY

This school is located near downtown Santa Fe. The school is located on a large site and is adjacent to the Desert Academy private school. The surrounding neighborhood is residential, although there are opportunities, given the site size, to explore options such as new grade configurations and sale/lease of portions of the site for alternative uses. The importance of the playfields and track should be explored and any uses should be integrated into the community.

OPPORTUNITIES ANALYSIS

This school has the opportunity to grow as more students attend the newly created K-8 school.
