SIZE AND FUNCTIONALITY OF SITE

Ramirez Thomas Elementary School is located on 11.73 acres. The school was first opened in 2003. The total square footage is 73,571.

INFRASTRUCTURE (ON-SITE AND OFF-SITE)

The school is a beautiful facility as are the play fields. The parking area in front of the Nye Center is currently under construction. Completed parking lots work well.

BUILDING CAPACITIES

The following school building capacities are shown in the chart below:

Design with portables (also called “building capacity”) is the generic enrollment average of PK to 6th grade students in a class times the number of classrooms in the school. The potential number of students per classroom is set by the minimum requirements for class size established by the New Mexico Public Education Department.

Program with portables (also called ''functional capacity'') is the generic enrollment average of PK to 6th grade students in a class times the number of classrooms in the school after the number of classrooms is reduced by subtracting rooms used for something other than general education times a loading factor of 95%.

Design without portables is the generic enrollment average of PK to 6th grade students in a class times the number of classrooms in the school if the school no longer has portables and if activities currently in portables are housed in permanent classrooms.

Program without portables is the generic enrollment average of PK to 6th grade students in a class times the number of classrooms in the school after the number of classrooms are reduced by subtracting rooms used for something other than general education and if all activities currently in portables are housed in a permanent classroom times a loading factor of 95%.

HISTORIC TRENDS AND PROJECTIONS FOR ENROLLMENT

Enrollment at Ramirez Thomas has stabilized after several changes in grade configuration.

ATTENDANCE

Ramirez Thomas Elementary School is located on the corner of Ca’Po’Pi and Rufina Rd. Students living in Las Acequias subdivision and San Rafael and Vista Alegre apartments are also assigned to Ramirez Thomas and are transported to school on one bus. Of the students living in the assignment area, 73% attend Ramirez Thomas Elementary School. Of the total number of students who attend the school, 76% are from the assignment area.

RESIDENTIAL GROWTH PATTERNS

New residential developments in the Ramirez Thomas Elementary School attendance area are expected to have relatively high student yields. Even so, the enrollment at the school has remained stable or has declined slightly.

CHARACTERISTICS AND IMPACTS OF NEIGHBORHOOD AND COMMUNITY

Ramirez Thomas Elementary is a fairly new facility. School population at any one time is approximately 97% Hispanic.

CURRENT AND FUTURE PROGRAMS

The school is a Pre-K through 5th grade, Title I school offering a free breakfast and lunch program to all students. The school also offers an after-school tutoring and after-school childcare five days per week. Extracurricular activities include band, violin, and Mariachi guitar.

The school has business/community partnerships with Rebekah’s for music instruction, Kids at Play, and Chamber Music. It offers programs in visual and performing arts, music, sports, health programs, academic support programs (Compass Learning, literacy coach,· computer lab teacher), after-school programs (after-school tutoring, Team of Champions), parent support programs (Parent Room, classes in ESL – Santa Fe Community College), and opportunities for parent involvement (PTC, Grandparent Volunteers Program, parent school advisor).

Should be included in future partnership opportunities
Should be evaluated for future capital projects for the next bond issue and/or capital program

No changes recommended, however, enrollment is increasing quickly in this area and the Children’s Museum is interested in this site as a project site.
