SIZE AND FUNCTIONALITY OF SITE

Capital High School is located on 53.67 acres. The school first opened in 1988 and had additions in 1993 and 2002. The total square footage is 227,914 with 8,736 square feet in portable buildings.

INFRASTRUCTURE (ON-SITE AND OFF-SITE)

The school is located in a residential area, at the edge of a major avenue and a secondary road. Cars back up along the road while queuing to drive into the access roads to the parking area. Two parking areas are northeast of the school, one for student parking near the south area of the school and one for staff and visitors. There is a 400-foot walk. The separation works well. The original arroyo drainage problems have been solved. A new security booth has been added at the entrance to the parking lots.

Athletic fields and tennis courts are in very good condition. Softball and baseball fields had dying grass due to drought, and needed top dressing due to prairie dog damage and other surface undulation issues. Significant slope stabilization issues from the upper level to the football field levels needed to be resolved. The press box structure needed immediate improvements. The original site area was expanded with the in-fill of an arroyo. However, the fill area is not recommended for building expansion.

BUILDING CAPACITIES

The following school building capacities are shown in the chart below:

Design with portables (also called “building capacity”) is the generic enrollment average of 9th to 12th grade students in a class times the number of classrooms in the school. The potential number of students per classroom is an average of 25.

Program with portables (also called ''functional capacity'') is the New Mexico Public Education Department's pupil to teacher ratio for 9th to 12th grade students in a class times the number of classrooms in the school after the number of classrooms is reduced by subtracting rooms used for something other than general education times a number of factors.

Design without portables is the generic enrollment average of 9th to 12th grade students in a class times the number of classrooms in the school if the school no longer has portables and if activities currently in portables are housed in permanent classrooms. The potential number of students per classroom is an average of 25.

Program without portables is the New Mexico Public Education Department's pupil to teacher ratio for 9th to 12th grade students in a class times the number of classrooms in the school after the number of classrooms are reduced by subtracting rooms used for something other than general education and if all activities currently in portables are housed in a permanent classroom times a number of factors.

Enrollment 2010-11 40th Day is the number of students attending the school on the state reporting day of the 2010-11 school year.

Enrollment at Capital does not exceed its design or program capacity. Program capacity would be exceeded if all students living in the assignment area would attend the school.

HISTORIC TRENDS AND PROJECTIONS FOR ENROLLMENT

Capital High School has experienced gradually declining enrollment since 2000-01. While the 8th grade feeders from several middle schools have been growing, out-transfers have been high. Projections show a decline in continuing enrollment until 2012, followed by fairly strong growth.

ATTENDANCE

Capital High School is located on Paseo del Sol in the southwest portion of Santa Fe. Students who live in the western portion of the district along with El Dorado make up the assignment area. Students who live in El Dorado, Galisteo, Lamy, Glorieta and areas in between those communities have the opportunity to attend either Capitol or Santa Fe High Schools by shuttling from El Dorado Elementary School. Students are transported to school on 1 of 12 buses. Of the students living in the assignment area, 58% attend Capitol High School. Of the total number of students who attend the school, 94% are from the assignment area.

CHARACTERISTICS AND IMPACTS OF NEIGHBORHOOD AND COMMUNITY

Capital HS is located in the south area of Santa Fe and continues to have a steady enrollment. The school is scheduled for renovation to create a nice, welcoming atmosphere.
