SIZE AND FUNCTIONALITY OF SITE

Agua Fria Elementary School is located on 10 acres. The school was first opened in 1938 and had additions in 1966, 1968, 1992, 2001 and 2005. The total square footage is 73,187 with 1,664 square feet in portable buildings.

INFRASTRUCTURE (ON-SITE AND OFF-SITE)

The school is located along a busy street in a residential area. Landscaping and drainage should be improved. There is an attractive area landscaped by the students. The main parking lot is large, but separation is poor between the bus drop-off/pick-up area, parking and parent pick-up areas. Walkways between most buildings are not covered and the front sidewalk is very narrow. Both pedestrian and vehicular circulation is very awkward throughout the site. (SFPS FMP Update 2003)

Recent site improvements include new upper and lower grade playground areas behind the new wing.

BUILDING CAPACITIES

The following school building capacities are shown in the chart below:

Design with portables (also called “building capacity”) is the generic enrollment average of PK to 6th grade students in a class times the number of classrooms in the school. The potential number of students per classroom is set by the minimum requirements for class size established by the New Mexico Public Education Department.

Program with portables (also called ''functional capacity'') is the generic enrollment average of PK to 6th grade students in a class times the number of classrooms in the school after the number of classrooms is reduced by subtracting rooms used for something other than general education times a loading factor of 95%.

Design without portables is the generic enrollment average of PK to 6th grade students in a class times the number of classrooms in the school if the school no longer has portables and if activities currently in portables are housed in permanent classrooms.

Program without portables is the generic enrollment average of PK to 6th grade students in a class times the number of classrooms in the school after the number of classrooms are reduced by subtracting rooms used for something other than general education and if all activities currently in portables are housed in a permanent classroom times a loading factor of 95%.

Enrollment 2010-11 40th Day is the number of students attending the school on the state reporting day of the 2010-11 school year.

Enrollment at Agua Fria does not exceed its design or program capacity. If the school no longer had portables, the program capacity would be exceeded.

HISTORIC TRENDS AND PROJECTIONS FOR ENROLLMENT

Agua Fria Elementary School enrollment increased rapidly until 2004-05, when Ramirez Thomas Elementary School opened and reduced Agua Fria’s attendance area. Enrollment was regained in the past two years, and is projected to continue to grow at a moderate rate through most of the projection period.

ATTENDANCE

Students living in homes in the Cottonwood Mobile Home Park and along Agua Fria Road from San Felipe to Siler Roads are assigned to attend the school. Due to the rural location of the school and the lack of sidewalks, most students assigned to attend Agua Fria Elementary School are transported to the school on 1 of 4 buses. Of the students living in the assignment area, 73% attend Agua Fria Elementary School. Of the total number of students who attend the school, 73% are from the assignment area.

CURRENT AND FUTURE PROGRAMS

The school’s focus has been on curriculum alignment in math, reading, science and social studies and to improve the academic achievement of all students. The school’s goal is to drive instruction based on varied student assessments (e.g., Levels/Measures of Academic Progress [MAP], New Mexico Standards-Based Assessments [NMSBA], teacher assessments, etc.). Team planning and professional development are critical components of Agua Fria’s Educational Plan for Student Success and Alternative Governance Plan.

Agua Fria Elementary School instructs students in grades Pre-K to sixth grade. A model bilingual maintenance program is available to students in grades Pre-K to sixth grade and a model 90/10 dual language program currently serves K-2 students. Agua Fria has variety of programs such as counseling groups, art, music, PE, Cooking with Kids, and an after-school program that serves approximately 150 students. There is also a family resource center that assists families and the school community to help all students achieve their academic potential.

A partnership with a private foundation in Santa Fe has also provided the school with additional assistance that includes volunteers working with students primarily in the area of literacy. The program continues to provide three new books a year for each student to keep and assures that every student in grades three through six has an English and Spanish dictionary. This private foundation also assists the school with the partnership for healthy schools which provides funds for a full-time physical education teacher, health educator, and administrative assistant to assist with medical referrals to the La Familia Medical Center.
