SIZE AND FUNCTIONALITY OF SITE

Acequia Madre Elementary School is located on 3.3 acres. The school was first opened in 1953 and had additions in 1965 and 2004. The total square footage is 23,329, with 960 square feet in portable buildings.

INFRASTRUCTURE (ON-SITE AND OFF-SITE)

The site is located on a narrow, quiet street in a residential area. The site is smaller than recommended for an elementary school. On-site parking is adequate for staff and visitors, but inadequate for a large number of visitors and special event parking.

Parent drop-off/pick-up is managed in the parking lot. Bus drop-off/pick-up is separate from the parking lot and off street.

Site issues include limited building expansion space, lack of special event parking, lack of accessible parking and access route to main entrance, and drainage between the gymnasium and music portable. (SFPS Preservation Schools Study 2002)

BUILDING CAPACITIES

The following school building capacities are shown in the chart below:

Design with portables (also called “building capacity”) is the generic enrollment average of PK to 6th grade students in a class times the number of classrooms in the school. The potential number of students per classroom is set by the minimum requirements for class size established by the New Mexico Public Education Department.

Program with portables (also called ''functional capacity'') is the generic enrollment average of PK to 6th grade students in a class times the number of classrooms in the school after the number of classrooms is reduced by subtracting rooms used for something other than general education times a loading factor of 95%.

Design without portables is the generic enrollment average of PK to 6th grade students in a class times the number of classrooms in the school if the school no longer has portables and if activities currently in portables are housed in permanent classrooms.

Program without portables is the generic enrollment average of PK to 6th grade students in a class times the number of classrooms in the school after the number of classrooms are reduced by subtracting rooms used for something other than general education and if all activities currently in portables are housed in a permanent classroom times a loading factor of 95%.

Enrollment 2010-11 40th Day is the number of students attending the school on the state reporting day of the 2010-11 school year.

Enrollment at Acequia Madre does not exceed its design or program capacity. Enrollment is controlled by the number of transfer students the school accepts.

HISTORIC TRENDS AND PROJECTIONS FOR ENROLLMENT

Acequia Madre Elementary School has generally had a stable enrollment, while it grew slightly during the last few school years. Enrollment is projected to remain stable or slightly decrease as the overall district enrollment decreases.

ATTENDANCE

Acequia Madre Elementary School is located near downtown Santa Fe on the east side. Students living in the assignment area are expected to walk to school. Because schools in the southwest area of Santa Fe do not meet Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) requirements, students who live there and choose to attend Acequia Madre are transported to school by bus. Of the students living in the assignment area, 89% attend Acequia Madre Elementary School. Of the total number of students who attend the school, 55% are from the assignment area.

CHARACTERISTICS AND IMPACTS OF NEIGHBORHOOD AND COMMUNITY

Acequia Madre Elementary School is a traditional neighborhood school near downtown Santa Fe on the historic east side. There is one classroom for each grade K-6. Because the neighborhood is changing and there are fewer children living nearby, about half of the students attend on interzone transfers.

People choose Acequia Madre for a variety of reasons: its peaceful, nurturing environment, its small size, its reputation for high academic standards, and its arts-immersion program.

CURRENT AND FUTURE PROGRAMS

Acequia Madre has these business/community partnerships: Capital Building evacuation site, Albertson’s, Target, and PNM grants. It offers programs in visual and performing arts, music, sports, and special annual events (Fun Run, grade-level theater performances, holiday band and music program, spring band and violin program, Valentine’s Day family dance, science and art fairs), associated programs that extend curriculum (school newspaper grade 6), health programs, academic support programs (Compass Learning, accelerated reader), after-school programs (Spanish—PTC funded), yearbook club, parent involvement opportunities (PTC meetings, PTC fundraisers, volunteers, parent-school advisory), and other special programs (outdoor classroom, garden and greenhouse).

OPPORTUNITIES ANALYSIS

The students currently attending Acequia Madre Elementary School are projected to begin attending Atalaya Elementary School in the 2011-12 school year.

Plans for the facility are unknown at this time.
